HOUSTON — Here’s a lesson in defensive driving — even if you are on the run from the cops.

The Houston Police Department said S. Gessner patrol officers spotted a driver and three passengers heading westward down Hilcroft around 8 p.m. Sunday. The vehicle stood out because it had been stolen in a robbery the night before in a different location, officers said.

Investigator said police started to pursue the suspects, but noticing it was raining heavily and traffic was bad, thought it safest to call the chase off.

A few moments later, investigators said another HPD officer was eating dinner at a shopping center when the same suspect’s car slammed into a corner of the building near Bellaire Boulevard and Corporate Drive.

Investigators said the driver lost control in the rain, drove across a road median and through the shopping center’s parking lot before crashing. Police said a person riding in the front seat was injured and couldn’t move, while the two backseat passengers ran away on foot.

No bystanders in the shopping center were hurt. The officer ran outside and arrested the driver and injured suspect.

No reports if the driver was hurt, but he was slapped with felony evading, among other charges.

Police were unable to find the two runaway suspects.
