HOUSTON — The driver in a police chase is expected to survive after being shot multiple times by officers near Greenspoint, the Houston Police Department said.

Investigators said police tried to stop the suspect, who was speeding in a minivan, on North Base at N. Sam Houston Parkway around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

HPD said the driver sped off, leading the officers on a short chase to West View Place at Benmar Road.

“The vehicle runs through a red light at Northchase, and at that point, they initiate a traffic stop,” Jodi Silva of HPD said.

At one point, the suspect turned into an apartment complex. Possibly not realizing the community was gated, police said he slammed on his breaks.

Officers said the driver jumped out, carrying a gun, and ran away on foot. Police chased the suspect, demanding he stop and drop his weapon.

Investigators said the suspect turned toward one of the officers and fired. Both officers started shooting back, hitting the suspect several times, the department said.

The suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in serious but stable condition after getting medical attention at the scene. He is expected to survive his injuries.

Silva said the suspect’s gun was recovered at the scene.

“It’s also important to note, that this suspect is believed to have been apprehended from a robbery this evening,” Silva said. “It’s nearby. We’ve got one suspect detained, so it’s an ongoing investigation at this point.”
