HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — The 22-year-old man charged in the death of his mother made a dramatic plea for forgiveness from his family Monday morning as officers escorted him from a Harris County court room.

Blake Jefferson broke into heavy tears and loud screams as exited.

He is charged with murder after investigators said he killed Dedré Jefferson, a member of the Alief Independent School District school board.

The brutal attack happened shortly before 2 a.m. at the family's house in the 13600 block of Garden Grove Court inside the Westwind Townhomes.

Investigators said Blake Jefferson attacked his mother while she spoke on the phone with his grandmother. Officers said the mother, in her 40s, was acting strangely as she called the grandmother for help. The victim's screams were heard over the phone before the connection was lost, deputies said.

The grandmother called 911.

Dedré Jefferson was later found in the garage when officers arrived, she had died from multiple stab wounds. Deputies said Blake Jefferson used several different kitchen knives during the attack.

Blake Jefferson was eventually found hiding in a bedroom closest after forcing his way into a neighbor's home, the sheriff's office said. Investigators said neighbors were able to escape the house unharmed and alerted other residents and officers he was inside.

The son was taken to the precinct for questioning, officers said.
