HOUSTON, TX – Federal investigators say an immigration raid at a Houston Heights tortilleria is part of an effort to break up an illegal hiring ring.

Late Tuesday morning, federal agents handcuffed nearly a dozen people and led them out of La Espiga de Oro. Investigators say the factor’s owners broke federal labor laws by hiring undocumented workers, but activists say the raid just points to flaws in the U.S. immigration policy.

“This once again calls attention to the fact that we need comprehensive immigration reform system so that workers will no longer have to work without documentation,” said one immigration activist.

ICE says the 11 workers who were detained will be released after questioning if they don’t have a criminal record.
