11-year-old remains in critical condition after accidentally shooting self at east Houston home

HOUSTON -- An 11-year-old boy who accidentally shot himself in the neck while handling a gun at a home in east Houston remains in critical condition.  Houston police released a statement early Monday saying the child died, but have now sent a corrected report saying the boy remains in critical condition.

The accident happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of De Haven.

Paramedics with the Houston Fire Department rushed the boy to the hospital.

The victim's identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Houston police say the shooting appears to be accidental. No charges have been filed at this time.
