More than 4 thousand Houstonians gave the Tour de Houston a “spin” this morning.

Braving temps in the upper 30’s, cyclists chose between a 20, 45 or 70-mile ride… all beginning and ending in front of City Hall.

The ride though H-town is part of the Mayor’s Wellness Weekend promoting exercise and alternative transportation. “The proceeds go to the Houston Parks Department and that helps raise money to not only put trees in the ground but maintain the beautiful parks that we have here in the city” explains Wendy Craven, the Manager of Corporate Outreach for Apache Corporation, the event’s sponsor.

So what motivates more than 4-thousand people to ride through Houston on a beautiful Sunday morning… for most, fun!  “It’s fun,  you make a lot of friends, it’s an easy bike ride- it’s not a race- you can just go at your own pace and have a good time with it” says cyclist Evan Camp.

For others, this is training for the MS 150.  A woman named Katie, riding with her family, tells us why, “I’ve had MS for 10 years, and so my family we’re riding in the MS150 this year. My daughter’s going to try to ride for the first time and she’s only 12… so we’re working to train for that.”

All the riders we spoke with agree, this is a great way to see parts of the Houston you might miss. No doubt the rough roads bruised some bums, but HPD coordinated traffic to keep cyclists safe.  “The benefit of this ride is definitely the safety. You get 20-miles through the city and you don’t have to worry about any cars running you over in the process” says Camp.

Maybe that’s why everyone used one word to describe today- “FUN!”

Ok NewsFixers — you heard it here — riding your bike on a gorgeous day is fun — go for it!
