HOUSTON, Tx. - Senseless violence along the North Freeway Friday night, leaves the owner of the “45 Smoke Shop” dead, and police on the hunt for the three armed men.

Police believe this was a targeted murder, and not a botched robbery.

Police Officer C. Liu says, “There were several people inside the business, but the owner is the one that got shot and killed…the cash register is still inside. Nothing appears to be taken.”

Police say around 10 p.m., 3 males toting pistols and long guns opened fire inside the head shop on 45 and Heslep street.

“The video quality isn’t that good, but it looks like Middle Eastern or Hispanics,” suggested Officer Liu.

The victim, 36 year-old Michael Phelan, was transported to Ben Taub hospital where he was pronounced dead.  Police believe the suspects fled in a dark colored, possibly black vehicle.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
