LOS ANGELES, CA – Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush may have bitten off more than he can chew, but not of state fair fare.
It was a recent comment about so-called anchor babies.
‘Frankly it’s more related to Asian people coming into our country, having children in that organized efforts, taking advantage of a noble concept, which is birthright citizenship.”
Critics say lumping all Asian-Americans in that comment, is anti-immigrant and offensive.
But Bush may not be totally wrong, because he was talking about ‘birth tourism,’ something some folks don`t want to talk about.
But, it’s a billion-dollar business catering mainly to Chinese families, and it`s really big in suburban Los Angeles.
Come to America pregnant, give birth, and baby goes home a u-s citizen, all thanks to the 14th amendment.
The road to America starts in Beijing where companies offer package deals with step-by-step instructions on getting a U.S. visa.
They also arrange travel to really nice places in the u-s where doctors and nurses are available around the clock.
Federal investigators say the cost starts at ten grand and can go as high as $50,000.
Part of that money is to learn how to lie to immigration to get that US citizenship for the baby.
It`s not illegal to come to the U.S. just to have a baby, but how it`s done can be.
So far this year, federal agents hit dozens of houses in the Los Angeles area with visa and tax fraud charges.
Why do Chinese parents do this? Because a U.S. passport can lead to better schools in China and in other countries.
Also, if things go bad in China, they can send their U.S. born child here to sponsor them when the kid turns 21.
The downside is that the kid is responsible for paying U.S. taxes, and if they don`t, they could end up in jail, but that`s a chance the parents are willing to take.
