HOUSTON, TX – If you like Highway 59, then you’ll love 69 because it’s an interstate.

When finished, I-69 will be a continuous corridor from Mexico to Canada. So far, it’s built from Port Arthur, Texas to Minnesota making I-69 a pretty long stretch.

Chances are you may have seen it creep onto highway signs next to 59.

Houston driver Edward Lewis says, “One of them say 59 one of them say 69 so you don`t know exactly what highway you on.”

If you’re confused by the sudden addition of Interstate 69, then you’re not alone.

Joseph Bazan adds, “It`s not making no sense it`s been like that a year or two sometimes you get people from out of town and they don`t know the difference between 59 and 69″

Some people in town don’t much understand it either, but the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) isn’t worried.

Danny Perez of TXDOT says. “We`re thinking people are becoming more accustomed to seeing it out there”

That wasn’t exactly what we encountered when talking to drivers around Houston. Folks we talked to say the additional interstate makes them feel lost.

Karl Roppel says, “It`s totally confusing because you got 69 on some of the Google maps, then you got I59 on the addresses you look up.”

It’s true that not all maps list I-69 yet. One area of 59 that hasn’t shared space with I-69 yet is inside the Loop, but that won’t last long.

Perez says, “We will designate the portion of 59 inside the loop as 69 so you`ll see a continuous flow when you’re along the roadway from south in Fort Bend County all the way through Harris County into Montgomery County”

Across the country the road signs for I-69 are actually disappearing since it seems their “connotation” makes them attractive to thieves. So, just be careful when you’re on I-69 because you don’t want to get lost.
