HOUSTON, TX — Actor and director Richard Attenborough passed away over the weekend at 90 years old. He was best known to audiences as John Hammond, who first welcomed us to Jurassic Park.
What Houstonians may not know is how closely Houston is tied to the movie and character.
A paleontologist with the Houston Museum of Natural Science helped out with the first two Jurassic Park movies as a consultant. Doctor Robert Bakker made sure all the dinosaurs were realistic.
Paleontologists like Dr. Bakker, as well as characters like Attenborough’s John Hammond, made dinosaurs cool again for a whole new generation of movie fans.
Davide Temple, the associate curator of paleontology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, said, “There are many paleontologists working today, new people starting their career, and one of the things that launched them down that path was this movie.”
