Equal Rights Ordinances up in the air

HOUSTON -- We still don't know for sure whether Houston’s Equal Rights Ordinance (dubbed “HERO") will be upheld by the jury or not. In the meantime, the program that creates protections against discrimination is not being enforced. It is thought to mainly affect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.

A similar battle is brewing in Kansas. Up to our north, Governor Sam Brownback signed an executive order to eliminate LGBT protections for state workers there.

A statement from Governor Bownback's office said the move: "…ensures that state employees enjoy the same civil rights as all Kansans without creating additional 'protected classes…'"
