Jeffrey Dahmer, Michael Vick, DMX and the BTK Killer. It's an odd group to be sure, but these men all share an alleged history of animal abuse. The FBI wants to start cracking down on animal cruelty cases by compiling national numbers in its annual report.
Beginning next month, all those cases will be tallied annually possibly helping the FBI prevent more violent behavior.
For example, many serial killers - including Dahmer and Ted Bundy - tortured neighborhood pets before their actions escalated.
Amy Blasher, Unit Chief with the FBI, says, "They believe that animal cruelty was an early indicator of violent crime and that`s really what led the discussions with our law enforcement partners throughout the country."
Animal advocates in Texas say this is a step in the right direction.
Joanne Jackson with Citizens for Animal Protection adds, "I personally think it's wonderful that they're going to do that. I wish that it had happened a long time ago."
The FBI admits it could take up to six years to identify trends, but they hope this move takes a bite out of animal and human crimes.
