DELANO, CA - Lawrence Phillips, the once college football standout and former NFL player is suspected of killing his prison cellmate. Phillips is currently serving 31 years in a California prison for multiple crimes including choking his girlfriend until she was unconscious and running over three teenagers with his car.

Damion Soward, who was a convicted murderer, was found unresponsive Saturday morning. If you followed college football in the 1990s, you may remember Phillips as a Heisman hopeful who led Nebraska to two back-to-back championships. Even then he was constantly in trouble with the law, getting arrested five times for violent crimes in just a few years.
