Former NFL running back found dead in jail cell

DELANO, CA – Lawrence Phillips, 40, the once college football standout and former NFL player was found dead in his jail cell. Phillips is currently serving 31 years in a California prison for multiple crimes including choking his girlfriend until she was unconscious and running over three teenagers with his car.

Prison officials at Kern Valley State Prison were doing security checks when they found Phillips unresponsive in his jail cell. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounce dead a couple of hours later.

Phillips had been in solitary confinement after he was suspected of killing jail cellmate.

Phillips was a star running back for the Nebraska Cornhuskers as a Heisman-trophy hopeful when they had back-to-back championships in 1990s. He was then drafted by the Rams as a Top 10 pick in the NFL before washing out and landing in jail for his crimes.
