TOPEKA, KS – To say that many are saddened that Fred Phelps, Sr. is on his deathbed could be an understatement. That’s because he’s the ex-pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church. The church is known for its extreme ideologies against homosexuality. Phelps established the church in 1955. It gained national attention for picketing funerals, public events and more. In a very ironic twist, the church he created shunned him.

The news came from Phelps’ estranged son, Nathan Phelps. He posted a message on Facebook saying that he had learned his father was ex-communicated from the church back in August 2013 and was now on the edge of death at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

Part of Nathan’s message also pointed out the irony:

“I’m not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made.”

Nathan’s views are a complete 180 from his father’s. He lives in Canada and works to promote LGBT rights.

Dying alone—something Fred Phelps can’t blame on anyone else but himself.
