SEATTLE, Washington – The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is reinventing sanitation overseas with a machine that draws drinking water and electricity out of feces.
“Over 2.5 billion people have no access to safe sanitation. We asked brilliant engineers to help us solve that problem,” says Bill Gates in a video posted online.
Those engineers crafted a machine that heats feces to a hair under 2,000 degrees, drawing-out its water, which is then treated to make it drinkable. In the meantime, dried-out waste gets burned, producing enough electricity to operate the whole machine and send some excess out.
The first operational plant is planned for Senegal. According to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, it could save a huge number of lives.
