WASHINGTON, D.C. – It has been two days since the shooting massacre at Washington Navy Yard that left 13 people dead, including the shooter. Now it seems everyone and their brother has something to say about it.
The Secretary of Defense is promising security changes at national bases, and Aaron Alexis’ mother is apologizing for her son’s deadly spree.
“To the families of the victims I am so, so very sorry that this has happened. My heart is broken,” said Cathleen Alexis.
Aaron Alexis apparently had a history of mental health problems and run-ins with the law. Despite that, he was able to buy a shotgun, which he reportedly carved into with inscriptions like ‘better off this way.’
The events have also re-triggered the gun debate. Newtown families have descended on Washington. President Obama has tweeted photos of shooting victims, asking ‘what will it take’ for congress to act. And today Governor Rick Perry toured Maryland’s largest gun manufacturer to try to lure business down here.
Even Starbucks is getting a little frothy. The chain is asking customers not to bring guns into their stores, even though they will continue serving people who do.
