HOUSTON, TX – You know what they say: what goes up, must come down. And despite record profits last year, gun sales in the US are falling faster than a speeding bullet. The FBI says background checks for folks buying guns are down more than a third. And the reason may not be what you think.
“A year or so ago, Obama scared the bejeebers out of the gun buying public,” says Jim Pruett of Jim Pruett’s Guns & Ammo, “and they bought all the guns they could get. he was the greatest gun salesman in the history of mankind.”
Remember President Obama’s big push for gun control legislation last year? The threat of not being able to buy certain types of guns and clips anymore was enough to send folks flocking to the stores. But then, Obama’s bill didn’t pass the legislature. And now that folks are stocked up, there’s nothing left to buy. Leaving a hole in store-owner’s businesses. Enough so, that after fourteen years in the business, Jim Pruett’s is closing up shop. Which makes the President’s push for gun control a twisted sort of victory, and leaves folks normally opposed to gun legislation wishing he’d push it some more.
“If he did, say this week, then Jim Pruett’s guns and ammo would have this magical reopening,” Pruett laughs.
It’s what the scholars call a catch-22. Unfortunately for folks in the gun business, the 22 doesn’t mean caliber.
