HOUSTON, Tx. — Shooters in the workplace or in schools are not situations any of us think will actually happen to us. Unfortunately these events are all too real.

Stephen Daniel with Houston Police Department finds himself in locations all around Houston, preparing the unsuspecting in the event an active shooter arrives.

Daniel said, “Ninety-five percent of whether you survive one of these terrible active shooting situations really depends on your mindset, not just what kind of weapon you may or may not have with you.”

The three keys for survival are:

  1. Run if there is a possible escape route.
  2. If you can’t run, hide in an area out of the shooter’s view.
  3. As a last resort, fight and try to incapacitate the shooter.

“These people are not undefeatable,” said Daniel. “We talk about taking the people down but all we’re really talking about is tackling them, getting them on the ground, where they cannot point and shoot.”

It sounds intimidating, but it could be the difference between fifteen casualties or just a few. Your life might depend on it.
