HOUSTON — Two children were shot in a drive-by shooting in southeast Houston Thursday night, the Houston Police Department said.

The shooting happened outside a nail salon in the 3900 block of Scott Street near Wheeler Avenue around 6:30 p.m.

Investigators said the mother left her three children — ages 11, 8 and 5 —  inside the car when someone pulled up and fired multiple shots, striking the two younger children.

The 8-year-old boy was shot in the head and transported to the hospital in critical condition.

The  5-year-old girl was shot in the leg, police said. Her condition is unknown.

The oldest child was unharmed.

Investigators believe the shooting was targeted due to the number of shots fired.

“You’ve got to give them up. This is not going to be the new normal in this city. You’ve got to give them up,” Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said at a news conference Friday morning. “They shot our children. We are going to get them. We are going to find them. We are going to get them off the street.”
