WASHINGTON D.C. – The IRS says an email hoax is circulating.
The emails warn people that their income is “flagged for review due to a processing error.” They then instruct unsuspecting recipients to contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service (a legitimate organization) for help. Once users try to access those resources by clicking on links in the email, pages that solicit personal information pop-up.
The IRS says don’t fall for the bait. Do not click on anything in the email. Instead simply forward the message to them: phishing@irs.gov.
