HOUSTON, TX – U.S. veterans need jobs, and the Texas Medical Center is doing its part to help find them.
Willie French, Director of Talent Acquisition at The Methodist Hospital System said, “There are ample opportunities outside of the clinical profession that are applicable to veterans, such as maintenance, supply chain, administration, facilities, security, the list goes on and on.”
About 15 organizations in the medical center are part of the Red, White and You initiative, participating in a job fair focused on helping former service men and women find thousands of jobs available in the med center.
Dr. ‘Red’ Duke of UTHealth and Memorial Hermann, one of the founders of the program says, “To me this event is very important because it represents a real outpouring of interest and care on the part of the folks at the Texas Medical Center. To do what can be done for these people who’ve made a real sacrifice of their time, sometimes been injured.”
The vets don’t take it lightly.
“It’s just very encouraging seeing that someone is trying to help with looking for a job, because it’s very difficult after you get out of the military,” said Shameka Williams, who served in the Army National Guard,
Military service can also be a plus for employers.
Brian Wilson, a Veteran Recruiter with UTHealth, found his position through the program last year says, “What they don’t realize is there is also the training at management level that the military gave people, and the teamwork, and just the dedication that is given to you in boot camp.”
The folks at the Texas Medical Center aren’t just serving the sick, but also giving a leg up to those who have served for us.
