HOUSTON – This July 4th weekend, there are a couple of things you can count on such as  BBQ and fireworks.

In these dog days of July, we’ve got to remember to keep our pets safe and help keep them from freaking out when they hear those fireworks going off.

“It’s best to make sure they are on a leash or within an enclosed area, so that if they get spooked they don’t run away,” said Ashtyn Rivet of BARC.

It’s said that even the most well-behaved pets can go through serious behavioral changes after hearing these blasts.

“Pets don’t understand fireworks…a pet not only doesn’t realize what’s going on but they don’t realize where the sound is coming from. Their ears are very sensitive,” Rivet further stated.

If you decide to stay indoors, pet and animal experts say drown out the fireworks by closing windows and curtains.

While you’re inside, allow your pet to hide if they get frightened by the sound.

When you get down to it, fireworks are a lots of “oooos” and “ahhhhs” for us, but they can be downright “ruff” for your pup.
