SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. – Imagine parking your car right in front of your house and later discovering you have a $50 ticket!

“Low and behold I had a ticket on my car, and when I first saw it, I thought to myself, ‘What could this be for?'” car owner Michael Cefali said. “I thought maybe I parked too far from the curb or something?”

It turned out the ticket wasn’t for illegal parking or anything like that. It was for something much more sinister: a  ‘For Sale’ sign!

Yes, in his quiet Southern California neighborhood it’s against the law to park on a public street and put your car up for sale.

“Any other sign is alright,” Cefali said. “You can have a garage sale sign. You can even advertise jewelry for sale in the window of the car, just not the car itself.”

But this car owner also happens to be a law student, and he thinks the city ordinance violates his first amendment rights.

“I thought to myself, ‘Well, this doesn’t look right,'” Cefali said. “And I looked it up. And sure enough, there was a case that was on point.”

So now he’s brought a federal lawsuit against the city, with the help of his college law professor and the Pacific Legal Foundation.

Cefali believes you can’t put a price on free speech, and that’s something his legal team will try to sell to a judge.
