TUCSON, AZ – Both sides of the gun-banning debate are locked and loaded and ready to fire on the opposition, for any reason.

Former astronaut Mark Kelly is learning that lesson first-hand.

Kelly is married to former congresswoman and shooting survivor Gabrielle Giffords. The two of them own guns, but they want Congress to ban assault weapons.

Right now you can buy an assault weapon if you pass a background check. And that’s where Kelly got in trouble.

A photo on his Facebook page, showing him at a Tucson gun shop filling out the paperwork for a 45 and an AR-15.

He did this the day before he and his wife showed up at an event to mark the two-year anniversary of the shooting where six people died and left her and 12 others wounded.

The Facebook photo has more than 5,000 comments, a lot of them negative from people on both sides of the issue.

Mixed messages don’t win friends and influence people, they just keep the real debate off-target.
