HOUSTON — The Houston Independent School district is mourning the lost of one of its teachers after she was hit Tuesday afternoon by an Amtrak train, administrators said.

Johnnie Harris had worked with the District almost 25 years, the school said. She had spent the last 10 years as a special education teaching assistant at Kashmere High School.

HISD administrators said the incident happened on Bennington Street and Lockwood Drive — just yards away from the high school.

“Ms. Harris was a treasured member of the Kashmere family,” Principal Nancy Blackwell said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ms. Harris’ family. She will be deeply missed.”

The Houston Police Department is investigating the incident.
