BEIJING, China - Officials in southwest China have banned smoking bacon and firewood-roasted chicken. The reason for the ban has to do with blaming both in part for the spike in air pollution.

The Chongqing Municipal Environment Protection Bureau says this type of cooking is part of the reason for the rise in PM 2.5, tiny air-pollutant particles that can cause lung problems and other health issues.

Smoking bacon, sausages, and other meats is a tradition practiced before the lunar New Year Festival. Now, violators can face a fine of up to $800.
