Kim Kelley-Wagner, 55, always knew she wanted to be a mom. So she decided to adopt two little girls from China, now ages 13 and 7. But, never in her wildest dreams did the communications director at a middle school in Charlottesville, Virginia, think she and her daughters would receive so much negative attention.
She says the ignorant and rude comments she has received on a daily basis shocked her. But instead of dismissing her critics she decided to shock them. Kelley-Wagner has created a controversial photo series starring her daughters. Each picture shows one of her daughters holding up a sign with a negative comment.
Kelley-Wagner tells Yahoo Shine, “I wanted to turn this into a teachable moment, especially because I don’t want the girls to internalize this negativity.”
And the pictures definitely teach you something! Here is what some of the signs read:
“Wow, your mom could have bought a nice car instead of adopting you.”
“Wow, special needs, bet she was extra expensive.”
“Didn’t you want one that looked like you?”
“How can you love a child you didn’t give birth to? I could NEVER do that.”
After posting the photos online Kelley-Wagner has gotten a lot of criticism. Saying this was a parenting fail and she’s exploiting her children.
I think this is a parenting win and I applaud Kelley-Wagner. Instead of being ashamed way to silence the ignorant people in the world. They say a picture’s worth a thousand words, well these pictures showing the cruel words, have left me speechless!
And that’s today’s helping of The Online Dish with Maggie.
