LONDON, ENGLAND – Slow-hand Eric Clapton made some big bucks over the weekend.

Sotheby’s auctioned a painting by German artist Gerhard Richter, ‘Abstraktes Bild’ for 21.3 million pounds, that’s about $34.2 million.

And that’s the most anyone has paid at auction for a work by a living artist.

The Daily Mail reports that Clapton purchased the painting eleven years ago and paid about $3.2 million.

Clapton studied art for year before going into music full-time. And he’s used the money from his music to assemble a fairly good art collection.

About 15 years ago, he unloaded 32 works, which included paintings by Matisse and Degas for about $670,000.

One thing’s for sure, Clapton won’t be singing the blues when he gets the check for this sale.
