PRETORIA, South Africa – As an athlete, South African Oscar Pistorius became the first person with no legs to compete in the Olympics Games.

Less than a year later, he was in jail for shooting to death his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He claimed he thought there was an intruder in the bathroom.

And now the judge has sentenced the “Blade Runner” to five years in prison.

"The interest of society demands that those who commit crimes must be punished. And in deserving cases, that they be punished severely,” said judge Thokozile Masipa. “As council for the defense correctly submitted, we ought to differentiate what is in the public interest and what the society wants. Society cannot always get what they want.”

Steenkamp’s family said they are satisfied with the sentence and ready to move on.

Pistorius took the sentence in stride, knowing he could be out of prison in 10 months after committing the ultimate in domestic abuse.
