Pokémon could be shelter dogs’ best friend

SUGAR LAND –  Are you playin’ Pokémon Go?

It seems like most of the world is on the hunt for Pikachu, Ditto and Eevee.

One animal shelter in Albuquerque, New Mexico jumped on the bandwagon,  but with a twist. They encouraged Pokémon players to take a furry friend on their search – call it Puppy Pokémon. So far 10 of the shelter’s 15 dogs have been adopted.

We asked folks at Sugar Land’s Memorial Park what they thought about adopting a dog to join them while Pokemon hunting.

“There’s a lot of stuff that can definitely hurt you if you’re not paying attention. So having a dog can increase your awareness of your surroundings,” suggests  Ali Hosseini.

“I think it’s a great idea for a lot of homeless dogs to actually get a home” says Bryan Gamboa.

Anubha Srivastava makes a good point saying, “Like a lot of other things that are pretty hyped up at the moment, I’m sure eventually, people won’t make as much time for Pokemon, and then, well there goes your fascination with having a dog!”

She may be right, but hopefully the dog will be considered part of the family by then.

“People are constantly going out and playing the game almost everyday, and it’s just another opportunity to take your dog out and get some exercise,” says Aidan Simmons.

Maybe a rescue in the Houston area should employ this strategy?

“SOCA thinks it’s a great idea to adopt a dog from the shelter as a walking companion. It’s a win for everybody. You get exercise, and they get their exercise,” says Rita Garretson with SOCA, Save Our Companion Animals.

But she wants everyone to know if they can’t adopt right now, they can still help. “If you download the WoofTrax Walk for a Dog App, and select Saving Our Companion Animals as your charity, you’ll get points and SOCA will get donations based on your walks,” explains Garretson.

Who would’ve thought Pokémon could be a dogs best friend.
