USA – Polar vortex sounds like a boring lesson in science class; but now many Americans are learning about the weather phenomenon first hand.

It has been described as an arctic cyclone, where cold air breaks free from the North Pole and causes temperatures to plunge. As many as 140 million Americans are being affected as we speak.

Temperatures have reached minus 32 in Fargo, ND. It’s about the same in Wisconsin, and it’s eight below in Houston! (Houston, Minnesota, that is).

In all, some 4,000 U.S. flights were cancelled on Monday from the snow and freezing weather. Nearly as many flights were delayed as well.
