Why do people smile when they eat sushi? Is it because they are happy to fork over big bucks for raw fish known in some places as bait?

Or is it because they are trying to keep from getting full-blown mental illness when they get older?

In this case, yes, it could be both, thanks to (you guessed it) another study, this one out of the University of Melbourne, Australia.

It says we need to eat more omega, man. And that is not to be confused with that movie with Charlton Heston.

No, it says we need to consume more Omega-3, the stuff found in fish oil, among other foods.

The study evaluated 81 individuals, known as subjects, ranging in age from 13 to 25 who had higher risks for developing a mental disorder.

After seven years, the researchers discovered only ten percent of those taking fish oil capsules developed psychosis or schizophrenia, compared to 40 percent who were taking a placebo capsule.

After taking into consideration other mental conditions, such as anxiety, the Australian researchers concluded that 83 percent of the placebo users met the criteria for a mental condition while only 53 percent of fish oil users showed similar signs.

Our brains are mostly fat, and we need fats for proper brain development, so this Omega-3 thing makes sense, especially if taken earlier rather than later.

And yes, this really is some fishy food for thought.
