SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – An Australian surfer learns whales are not always the gentle giants they may appear to be.

Bishan Rajapaske surfs at Bondi Beach almost every day, but got a big slap in the face by Mother Nature this time — literally.

A huge southern right whale swam right up to him and other surfers, as onlookers watched from the shore; but suddenly the happy encounter took an alarming turn.

The whale’s giant tail knocked him from his board and unconscious.

Fellow surfers and lifeguards were able to pull him from the water where they found him face down.

Luckily for him his only injuries were a concussion and sore shoulder.
