HOUSTON TX – The flies in Houston aren’t the only ones spreading around their diseases. People are getting down and dirty, too!

New numbers from the Houston Department of Health and Human Services is showing a 97% increase in new syphilis cases during the first seven months of 2012. Houston’s last outbreak was in 2007.

Health officials also say 39% of people with syphilis also tested positive for HIV. Officials say the people most at risk are gay men, people who have anonymous sex and those with a laundry list of sex partners.

While sleeping around and not being careful seem like a pretty obvious way to get an STD, it’s clearly not obvious enough for people to protect themselves.

So remember, before you get down, get tested. And play safe, Houston!
