SUGAR LAND, TX – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The tinsel is out, the lights have been strung and Santa’s got his spot picked out at the mall. There’s just one problem: “We haven’t even had Thanksgiving,” Houston shopper Judy Gauthier laments.
Poor old Thanksgiving. The forgotten holiday. No sooner does Halloween end than Christmas begins.
“I think it starts a little earlier each year,” Mike Wherry admits, “but this year I’m actually ready for it and actually looking forward to it.”
Nary a turkey can be found, or a scarecrow seen, in the wake of ornaments and lights. It seems like Thanksgiving has gone the way of the pilgrims. Though it wouldn’t be fair to say the holiday has been completely forgotten – more and more stores are vowing to be open Thanksgiving day. You know, so shoppers can get a jump start on Christmas.
“I’m hoping that a lot of people will not go shopping on Thanksgiving day,” Gauthier says, “it’s a day to give thanks to God for what we have.”
It’s not just the stores. Folks are getting in on the action, too.
“Oh, I have a Christmas tree,” Deborah Bravo exclaims, “I’ve decorated my house already.”
At this rate, it might not be long before Halloween gets swallowed up in the Christmas chaos, too. Maybe we should be thankful it hasn’t come to that. Yet.
