LOS ANGELES, CA -- The morning rush hour turned into a nightmare for dozens of people outside Los Angeles. Just before 6:00 a.m., a commuter train slammed into a tractor-trailer truck that had stopped on the tracks. Five train cars derailed. About 30 people had to be taken to hospitals, including the train's driver who is in critical condition.

It is estimated the train was going about 80 miles an hour when it hit the truck, smashing it to pieces and setting it on fire. The truck driver hopped out of the cab before the impact and then ran away from the crash. He was arrested a few miles away, and could face charges.

The national transportation safety board is reviewing whether the warning bells and crossing arms were functioning properly at the street crossing, but investigators say the accident was likely human error.
