SAN ANTONIO, TX – One San Antonio transgender student hopes his school district will transform some of its rules. Jayden Castillo claims he was kicked off a boys-only school bus because she was born a female.

The school bus he rides, has boys sit on one side and girls on the other.

“But last Monday they were divided as a boy bus and a girl bus and of course I went on the boy bus,” said Jayden.

That’s when Jayden says he was kicked off the bus.

“This was brought by parent concerns earlier about discipline, inappropriate behavior on the bus so the decision was made to separate the students,” said Rolando Martinez of Englewood ISD.

Jayden, now at the center of a protest outside San Antonio’s Memorial High School, got the attention and support of a Houston transgender woman with ties to the LGBT community.

You may remember Nikki Araguz. She was in a legal battle trying to receive death benefits after her firefighter husband, Thomas Araguz died in 2010.

After Jayden contacted Nikki through Facebook, she showed up in support of Jayden and his message for gender equality.

Nikki told Jayden, “You shouldn’t have to be so anxious that you are ready to collapse at the hands of your school administration and we are here to support you.”

The school is making some changes to reduce the chances of bullying occurring on the buses, and students will begin riding mixed buses.

Jayden definitely grabbed the wheel on this one. Hopefully things will continue to move in the right direction.
