MAUI, HI - What probably started out as a relaxing day at the beach in Hawaii, ended in a deadly encounter.

Authorities say a 65-year-old woman died after a she was attacked by a shark off the coast of Maui, making it the first fatal shark attack reported in Hawaii this year.

Reports say the woman was snorkeling with two other friends, but at some point was separated from them.

Unfortunately, when snorkelers finally found her, she was unresponsive and lying face about 200 yards offshore.

The Maui fire department says the injuries on her upper torso suggests she was attacked by a shark, but there are no witnesses.

As a result, ocean safety crews cleared and closed the beaches in Maui.
