PASADENA— A family is safe, but their home was destroyed, after a quick-thinking neighbor alerted them to a fire early Thursday.

Family members were sleeping inside the home around 1:30 a.m. when a neighbor told them that their garage was on fire. The owner rushed out to find his Ford Mustang engulfed in flames. He tried to contain the blaze with a hose, but was unsuccessful.

The fire quickly spread to the back of the house, bursting a gas line, power pole and transformer.

Firefighters from the Pasadena Fire Department arrived to the scene and managed to stop the fire from spreading to the neighbor’s home, and Centerpoint Energy turned off the gas and cut the power lines.

The owner said he believes a defect in his Mustang started the fire, but the official cause is under investigation.
