HOUSTON — An armed man was fatally shot by officers Thursday morning after the suspect robbed an Exxon gas station and then attempted to carjack several residents near the Bellaire area, the Houston Police Department said.
HPD responded to a robbery in progress at the Exxon Mobil gas station at 10721 S. Post Oak Boulevard around 8:34 a.m.
Investigators said the suspect entered the store and robbed the clerk at gunpoint before stealing a few beers from the fridge and then leaving. While the man drove away in a black Toyota Avalon, police said he noticed the clerk outside taking pictures and video of his vehicle.
Detectives said the suspect turned around and headed back to the gas station, as he did, the clerk ran into the store and locked herself in. Police said the suspect fired multiple gunshots at the store and the clerk before giving up and driving away, again.
No reports of the store clerk being harmed.
HPD Chief Art Acevedo said the suspect also robbed a person outside the gas station.
Officers arrived three minutes later and interviewed the clerk, who gave investigators a full description of the vehicle and suspect.
Moments later, Bellaire police responded to a multiple vehicle accident in the 5600 block of West Loop and recognized the suspect’s vehicle. Acevedo said the suspect refused officers’ commands and walked away from the scene, pointing a revolver at officers and several residents.
Bellaire PD was joined by HPD as they continued to pursue the suspect. At one point the suspect tried to carjack a person who refused to stop.
Eventually, an officer fired multiple rounds and hit the suspect around 8:56 a.m. The man ran for several steps before collapsing behind a shopping center near the HCC Southwest campus.
Bellaire firefighters pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.
Acevedo said one person was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained during the car crash.
