PEARLAND, Texas — The classmates of a high school football player are mourning Monday after their schoolmate collapsed and died at an away game over the weekend.

We can only imagine the stands were filled with excitement as the Shadow Creek High School football team took on St. Mary's Hall Friday night in San Antonio. It was during this game, Chase Lightfoot — a junior at Shadow Creek — collapsed in front of students and parents sometime into the game's second half.

Lightfoot, 17, was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed it was from a cardiovascular problem.

The Pearland community, especially his classmates, are stunned by this tragic loss.

"This is so unreal," Aylen Sosa posted on Twitter. "His friends and family are in our hearts."

The teen's family is trying to come to grips with the shock of losing their child, but they did release a statement saying,"sincere appreciation for all the acts of love and kindness shown during this most difficult time."

Alvin ISD brought in grief counselors Monday to help students cope with the loss.

Special T Designs in Manvel has created a t-shirt to honor Lightfoot with half the money going to his family.

A Go Fund Me account has already raised more than $12,000 to help the family.
