SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Talk about "surfing" the web!

Soon, Facebook will offer a virtual reality app that lets you and your friends go surfing, scuba diving, .....even visiting Mars anytime you want!

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated the new technology at the Oculus Connect 3 conference in San Jose on Thursday.

This is Facebook's vision of the future  -- today, creating a 'social virtual reality' where you can chat with friends with headsets using avatars. And even the avatars' facial expressions can be changed with a special controller.

And no matter where you are, you can join your friends in a virtual location where you do things together like playing games or watching Hulu.

But this "social" virtual reality is virtually rough around the edges, and some folks felt the demo was pretty weird.

The demo had mixed reviews online with some folks hoping the app gets a lot 'cooler' and smoother before Facebook actually launches it.

And some warned, this technology is de-socializing people -- and could lead to a future where no one ever has a reason to leave their living room!

But since all tech has to start somewhere, who knows what reality will look like in a decade or two?!
