PEACHTREE CITY, Georgia - A not-so-peachy start to the new year for the police chief of Peachtree City, Georgia. William McCollom is on administrative leave after admitting to shooting his wife in the early morning hours of new year's day.
"I'm just shocked and stunned that it was the police chief," said Gail Guthrie, a resident of Peachtree City.
Police say Chief McCollom called 9-1-1 around 4:17am saying he accidentally shot his wife, Margaret. She was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition.
Police aren't saying where she was shot, only that she was shot once while in the couple's bedroom.
"The department is hurting at this point. I mean, we're very concerned for, obviously his wife. We're concerned for the chief," said Lt. Mark Brown.
Meanwhile, the department has called in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
"We do not want to investigate our own, anyone in our own organization. I've had this policy for the last nine cities that I've worked with," said City Manager Jim Pennington.
No criminal charges have been filed yet.
"We have no leanings one way or the other at this point, because we just don't know. There are a lot of things we don't know yet about what took place that we need to know before we can make any decisions," said Fayette County D.A. Scott Ballard.
In other words, we'll just have to wait and see if something's rotten in Peachtree City.
