HOUSTON — Family, mourners and law enforcement officers from across the nation gathered Wednesday to their pay final respect to fallen Harris County sheriff’s deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal.

From Canada to California and many places in between, thousands showed up to the Berry Center to honor Dhaliwal.

During the Sikh service, beautiful music was played and a few speakers from the Skih community spoke. Sen. Ted Cruz also spoke during the service, praising Dhaliwal for his commitment to his faith, his family, and his commitment to serving others.

Dhaliwal was remembered as someone with a heart of gold and someone who helped gather resources for hurricane victims.

One woman, a former law enforcement officer, traveled to Houston from the Bay area to honor deputy Dhaliwal and said it was the least she could do.

She told us she spoke with Dhaliwal on the phone about two years ago in regard to some issues she was having with her department. She said his advice made a big impact on her.

“He said just work with them,” Harinder Kaur Khalsa said. “He was so good at connecting to people and bringing the community together and he said just educate people about who we are, they want to know who we are and I think what he gave everyone, why people are coming together to honor him is because he served humanity.”

The law enforcement service led by the sheriff’s department featured many local leaders including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Judge Lina Hidalgo and several others.

It was no doubt a somber day, but it was also a day to celebrate the impact that he made. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez spoke to us before he went in to the service and said Dhaliwal did more in 42 years of life than some people do who get many more years.
