HOUSTON, TX - Kids these days have it easy! They're reminded every Christmas that they better behave because jolly ol' Santa Claus is coming to town. The good boys and girls get gifts, and the naughty ones get coal. But over in Central Europe, they have an old-school Christmas tradition that makes sure kids stick to their promise of being good and his name is Krampus!
The not-so-jolly Krampus, with his devilish appearance and long red tongue, is like Saint Nick's henchman. He's the one that Santa gives the "naughty" list to. And if your bad, then you definitely don't want to be around when Krampus comes to town! According to alpine folklore, while Santa is off rewarding the well-behaved children, Krampus goes around beating the bad kids with sticks and then shoves them in his sack to carry them away! Ho-Ho-Horrific!!!
So, the next time you hear the words, "You better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout... I'm telling you why," you might be getting off easy if you only get coal in your stocking. Because if you live around the mountains in the middle of Europe, then a beat-down by Krampus is what you'd get. Okay kids, off to bed and remember Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
