HOUSTON, TX – We’ve known for a while now not to buy plastics that contain Bisphenol A, commonly known as BPA, that it can cause reproductive issues in adults and neurological issues in infants. It’s widely been removed from products and shelves when the plastics industry tried to self correct, but maybe not as correct as it should be.

“Many of these used substitute molecules that are very similar to BPA, for which we know have similar effects to BPA overall,” explains Dr. Arch Carson, Associate Professor at UT School of Public Health.

New research shows there’s another source of these BPA’s — receipt paper.

“I worked at Randall’s, I was a cashier, it’d be weird to wear gloves while you’re cashiering but I think people should be,” suggests Houstonian Christina Onyebuchi.

But Dr. Arch Carson says gloves aren’t the answer and that, “the best thing to do would be to get rid of the thermal receipts, there are other methods that don’t utilize BPA which are much safer from that point of view.”

Well that sounds expensive, and until that happens what can we do?

Dr. Carson says, “We don’t want to cause panic with this information, hand washing after handling these types of receipts is a good idea. It’s also a good idea not to put them around where your kids can play with them, or not in an area that can contaminate food.”

So now you can add your proof of purchase to the list of things out to get you. Stay safe out there Houston. We’d tell you to wear a helmet, but we’d have to check the plastic first.
