TOKYO, JAPAN – Caroline Kennedy is the new American ambassador to Japan. She got a rock star welcome in Tokyo. After a brief ceremony with the emperor, she rode down a street lined with thousands of adoring fans.
JFK was supposed to be the first American president to visit Japan. Almost exactly fifty years to the day after his assassination, his daughter assumed her position, and no one appeared concerned about her lack of diplomatic experience.
“That doesn’t matter,” said one woman who participated in the welcoming. “She can do the job.”
