MACOMB, IL - When it comes to college, it's not unusual to see courses offered in various cultural studies.

A course studying the culture of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community is being offered at Western Illinois University, as a minor in queer studies; where students learn about gender identity and sexual orientation.

Professor Merrill Cole says, "we have a lot of not just LGBTQ students, but students who don't really know what their sexuality might be, these courses are there for them, too."

The idea to offer queer studies came about last year from a conversation between professors and students.

A pilot course was offered and students showed interest.

"We are discussing literature. It's just different forms and different genres of literature that we haven't seen in classes before," says student Kareem Abdel-Rahim.

This makes the third college in the state to offer the curriculum, alongside the University of Illinois and Depaul University.
