WEBSTER, TX -- The Gulf Freeway southbound at Nasa Road 1 is re-open after a wreck involving a DPS trooper.

Investigators tell us the trooper was on the right shoulder, in his unit, monitoring drivers. That's when he was hit by a female driver.

"A red Mercedes-Benz was traveling at a high rate of speed tried to attempt a lane change to the right on the outside and ran into the back of the state trooper," said DPS Sgt. Richard Standifer.

The trooper had to be cut out of his unit. He was taken to the hospital with spleen and spine injuries. He is said to have undergone surgery. And is in serious condition.

Meanwhile, the female driver was also taken to the hospital to be tested for drunk driving.
